To avoid this, we recommend storing your hearing aids in a location with as little moisture as possible, and where they can be protected from debris and dust particles. An area where hearing aids should be kept away from is the bathroom. Bathrooms have lots of moisture, which can get into the hearing aid and block or damage crucial components such as the microphone.

THE MORNING ROUTINE

When going through your morning routine, it is important to ensure that you are putting your hearing aids in after using any hair, makeup, or other products that could damage the hearing aids. Aerosols such as hair spray, deodorant spray, and perfumes or colognes should be specifically monitored as they can cause substantial harm to your hearing aids. These types of products can spread as a mist that can land on the hearing aids and block the microphone.

CHILDREN AND ANIMALS

Now that lots of us are spending more time at home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we need to keep an ever-present eye on our hearing aids. We recommend being cautious with your hearing aids when near both pets and children. To children and animals, hearing aids do not look like delicate pieces of medical equipment, but rather like small toys or even food. We often hear stories of patients putting their hearing aids down on a side table, and only a couple of minutes later, see their hearing aid hanging out of the corner of their dog’s mouth. Both children and pets could be in serious danger if they were to accidentally swallow a hearing aid or hearing aid battery. We recommend treating your hearing aids like medicine and safely storing them in solid, sealed containers, especially if you have young children or pets living at home, or visiting.
