WHAT TO EXPECT WITH HEARING AIDS

Getting new hearing aids is an adjustment. Our team will take the necessary time to go over the important information that will help you be successful at hearing better.

WHY DOES IT TAKE TIME TO GET USED TO NEW HEARING AIDS?

  • High frequency sounds such as cutlery, dishes, toilets flushing and birds chirping are loud at first…
    •  some sounds may be strange, shrill or tinny
    • Rest assured, your auditory system will adapt to these sounds with practice
    • they will begin to sound much more normal after a few days and weeks
  • SOME patients feel there is not much of a difference with their new hearing aids at first…
    • this can also be NORMAL
    • we want your brain to warm up to the new sounds, especially high frequency ones so we provide gradual sound enhancement

SOME THINGS YOU MAY NOTICE WHEN YOU FIRST GET YOUR HEARING AIDS:

  • Your hearing loss has likely been ongoing for several years
    • you may not realize how many sounds, especially high frequency ones, you’ve been missing
  • Your brain needs to get used to listening through the hearing aid
    • this can take up to 18 months or more
    • the more listening situations you practice in, the better (restaurants, phone calls, music and radio listening, podcasts)

Each of these experiences above can be completely normal. It just depends on your individual auditory system.

We want to know what each patient’s unique hearing challenges are. We therefore complete a thorough audiometric test battery as well as ‘listening in noise’ testing. This gives us a better understanding of the ‘real world’ hearing abilities you have.

There is extensive research to show that early identification and treatment is critical to good brain health.
